Meet Jim Bedinger

Division President, National Police Credit Union

Jim Bedinger's distinguished career includes a milestone 20-year stint with the credit union, a full-service financial institution which has been serving the financial needs of police officers and their families for nearly eight decades.

National Police Credit Union is a marketing division of Chicago Patrolmen's Federal Credit Union. National Police Credit Union is the first and only full-service financial institution created solely for law enforcement officers and their families across the country. National Police Credit Union is dedicated to bringing the same robust roster of financial products, services, and educational programs to officers throughout the country that Chicago officers have enjoyed since 1938. National Police Credit Union debuted its first Satellite Business Office, which opened in Phoenix, AZ on September 5, 2017.

Bedinger's career with the credit union began in April 1997 when he was hired as Data Processing Manager. At the time, Chicago Patrolmen's Federal Credit Union had 13,500 members, $70 million in assets, and one location. Bedinger was hired to help bring the credit union “full service.”

According to Bedinger: “When I started at the credit union, we only had share savings accounts, share certificates, consumer loans and credit cards. We did not have ATMs, checking accounts, debit cards, mortgages, or parking since we were on the second floor of a high rise in downtown Chicago!”

Bedinger helped to create a better foundation upon which the credit union has been able to grow.  He implemented checking accounts; debit and ATM cards; home banking; email; and the credit union’s first computer network.

During the financial turmoil of the Great Recession, Bedinger traveled to Washington D.C. in May, 2009. He testified to a House of Representatives’ Financial Services Subcommittee on Financial Institutions and Consumer Credit on behalf of the National Association of Federal Credit Unions (NAFCU) regarding the passage of H.R. 2351, The Credit Union Share Insurance Stabilization Act. This Act was approved as a law in 2009.  This law benefitted all federally-insured credit unions.

Today, the credit union is truly a full-service financial institution serving over 33,000 members with $376 million in assets. The credit union is particularly proud of its Financial Planning and Education Center (FPEC) a hub of activity designed to help educate and empower members of all ages. Services include credit repair/counseling, insurance, and financial and retirement planning. Also housed in the FPEC is the credit union's Credit Union Service Organization (CUSO), featuring on-site mortgages through First Chicago Mortgage Services, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the credit union.

About the growth of the company, Bedinger says, “It has been great to watch the credit union grow and to be able to serve so many more members. In 2014 we expanded our field of membership to welcome sworn members of the Fraternal Order of Police and their families throughout the country. It’s very rewarding to be a part of that growth. My favorite thing about the credit union is the people I work with and the members we serve.  It is satisfying to serve law enforcement professionals and their families. One of my proudest achievements has been being a part of the success of the credit union and knowing that we are making a difference in our members’ lives.”

Prior to joining the credit union, Bedinger worked for Indiana Telco Credit Union (now known as Forum Credit Union) in Indianapolis, where he was a Data Processing Manager from 1995 to 1997.

As a point of interest, Bedinger thought he was going to be a Meteorologist.  However, given the prominent use of color radar as a fundamental part of the job nowadays, it is probably best he did not pursue that since he is colorblind.

“I thoroughly enjoy traveling and seeing new places, however nothing beats a beach vacation in my opinion,” opines Bedinger. “My personal goal is to travel to all seven continents.  I have been to all four in the Northern Hemisphere, now I have to eventually make it below the Equator."

“My future goals include ensuring that the credit union will be around for many years to come so that future generations of officers will be able to enjoy a financial institution personalized to their needs.  I cannot wait to see what the future holds.”

Bedinger is very proud of being the "voice" of the credit union -- his is the first voice that callers hear when they contact the Call Center!

Bedinger attended Wabash College, located in Crawfordsville, IN, where he received his BA in Liberal Arts. Selected as one of ten recipients of the annual Lilly Award Scholarships, Bedinger received a “full-ride,” which included an all-expense paid college education for four years.

Bedinger is a native of Cayuga, IN. He spent his youth in a small farm community in western Indiana, just a few miles from the Illinois border. He currently resides in the Ravenswood neighborhood of Chicago.
