Identity Theft and Data Breaches: Overview

Identity Theft and Data Breaches: Overview

A few months ago, an article was published that included disturbing stats on data breaches, which were taken from Identity Theft Resource Center (ITRC). The report indicated that data breaches have been happening at a record pace, and that the number of data breaches in the U.S. increased over 25% in the first half of last year.

Since the report was developed, there have been more major breaches announced, impacting over half of the country. These include: compromised data from 143 million consumers from the Equifax breach, personal information stolen from the Instagram breach, and 14 million personal records exposed from the Verizon breach.

Due to the severity of the current cyber-security threat, The National Credit Union Association (NCUA) is mandating that all credit unions have a cyber-security and response program in place to protect its members.

National Police Credit Union recently completed an extensive due diligence process to select the best identity theft and data breach program to protect our members. Our objective was to find a program that will protect members from all data breaches – even those that have already occurred such as the EquifaxInstagram and Verizon breaches.  In addition, we sought a comprehensive program featuring a multitude of proactive services, all designed to work hand-in-hand to increase the identity protection of you and your family.

According to the FBI, “knowledge and awareness” are the greatest defense, so we’ll soon be sending you more information on the current cyber-security landscape, and ultimately identify the program that best suits our abilities to help protect you.
